GBK is a superset of GB 2312-80 but also a subset of GB 13000.1-93.
GBK is an abbrivation of 国家标准扩展 guójiā biāozhǔn kuòzhǎn. It was proposed on December 1, 1995 by the CITS (中华人民共和国全国信息技术标准化技术委员会 zhōnghuárénmíngònghéguó quánguó xìnxī jìshù biāozhǔnhuà jìshù wěiyuánhuì)
Several companies joined foces on December 15, 1995 and proposed some improvements. These were accepted and the characterset was published as version 1.0. It was a step towards Unicode but to keep compatability with GB2312-80. Since the characterset was almost completely filled, there was a switch to GB 18030.
