Input Methods

There are several types of input methods available. There are input methods who are based on the pronounciation, character structre, characterset and a combination of pronounciation and character structure.
A good input method uses only 26 keys (which matches the amount of western letters) so that numbers and symbols can still be accesed directly while using the input method.
  • Pronounciation based (related see also Romanisation)

  • Structure based
  • These input methods are based on the structure of the character. They are more difficult to master (and because of that easly to forget) but one doesn't need to know the pronounciation to input a character.
  • Combination pronounciation - structure
    • Tze-loi 子來
    • Renzhi 认知吗

  • Direct input
  • These input methods use the number assigned in the characterset to the character.
    • dianbaoma 電報碼
    • guojiquweima 國際區位碼
    • neima 內碼
A good online resource is 中文輸入法世界 (Chinese)
There are several ways on how input methods work (on-the-spot, over-the-spot, off-the-spot, and root-window). For a comprehensive explanation check following link : http://www.mozilla.org/projects/intl/input-method-spec.html
